Description

In a career full of triumphs, this 1986 album might have been the pinnacle for Winwood; it sold three million copies and gave him his first #1, the Grammy-winning Higher Love. It joins the infectious title tune; the hit Freedom Overspill; Split Decision, and more pop gems with guests Joe Walsh, James Taylor and others.

"Back in the High Life" is an essential album for anyone who wants to truly know musical talent at its greatest height. Winwood''s amazing vocals and unparalleled skills with the organ and piano are alone reasons to buy every Steve Winwood album, but this album is especially notable for his blend of accessible, yet complex song arrangements. There are literally no weak points to this fantastic work. The truly great artists are more than the sum of their hit singles. You get mega hits like "Higher Love" and "Back in the High Life Again", however there are also gems like "Freedom Overspill" and the heartfelt, "My Love''s Leavin", that are no less great. In the interests of brevity I could go on and on, but I will stop. Buy it now, you will be happy that you did.

I was watching T.V. as usual, I saw an ad for a certain car brand, & I heard the distinct voice of Whitney Houston. No one else in this world sounds like her....🎙🎵
The song she was singing was in the background, it was "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood...😍
I had no idea that she recorded it before she passed away, but to my surprise, she most certainly did. I checked on it, & it seems that it was remastered digitally in 2019. A very good posthumous idea.
I also recalled that I purchased the album by Steve Winwood, yet didn''t have it in my MP3 player.
I checked here in the music department, & lo and behold... There it ''tis!
Hearing it through ear buds is almost an indescribable joy! I used to clean my apartment when my sons were young to this album, in awe of Chaka Khan''s vocals, music that takes you to the United Kingdom...🇬🇧 Beautifully recorded, written & performed. Just as I recall, a nice album to listen to, it takes me back to the days of no pandemic, enjoying friends and family.
Love it. ❤

I am a fan of Steve Winwood and his music. His original debut came in 1977, however, I first heard of him on 1980''s "Arc Of The Diver", which is another great album.

I highly recommend getting THIS edition, but look around for a good price and condition as these discs can be extremely pricey, brand new.

My favorite album of all time. It is my third one. People have taken then out of the player and laid them down instead of putting them back in the case. I can even use it to go to sleep. It was from a good time in my life. Old rock and roll is really good!

Having left Stevie behind after Traffic''s "All Join In" and Blind Faith, I missed the original release of Back In The Highlife. In a very bad time in my working life, I happened to hear the title song as I was lamenting my fate to myself in a hotel bar in L.A. - a city that is not my home. It knocked me out, totally and literally turned my head around(the bar combo was playing the song behind me), but imagine my chagrin when I returned home and found that due to some contract dispute that Winwood was involved in, the album was nowhere available! A sympathetic colleague saved me with a copied cassette and I have cherished every song on this album ever since. Now I am delighted to own what appear to be copies of the original masters on CD.

This may be from the 1980s, but still plays well. Every song is a hit. Listen for Joe Walsh''s licks on Take it as It Comes and Split Decision. Just wish this included Roll With It.

Steve Winwood had enjoyed a very successful career for over twenty years by the time this album came out. His first taste of fame came as a teenager with the Spencer Davis group and hits such as Keep On Running and Gimme Some Lovin'' songs that showed off Winwood''s exceptionally soulful vocals. After Spencer Davis he would enjoy further success with the psychedelic prog rock of Traffic with a brief detour into the supergroup Blind Faith with Eric Clapton and the volatile drummer Ginger Baker. By the late seventies Traffic had run out of steam and Winwood had embarked on a solo career producing 3 solo albums with himself playing most of the instruments these albums [ Steve Winwood, Arc Of A Diver and Talking Back To The Night] had been quite successful but it was to this album Back In The High Life that would send Winwood''s fame stratospheric. Like Peter Gabriel''s album So released in the same year Back In The High Life would mark a change in the way the artist worked. For the first time in awhile Winwood worked with a band using people like Joe Walsh and Nile Rodgers with singers such as James Taylor and most notably Chaka Khan on the hit single Higher Love. The album is awash with fine tracks including Higher Love, The Finer Things, Freedom Overspill and the title track, the album does have a very slick 80''s production that has dated some tracks but at its best it is a fine example of Winwoods exceptional musical and vocal talents. This album would be followed up by the equally successful Roll With It but by the mid nineties either he or the public lost interest in this high gloss soul sound and Winwood took a break from music before returning with the more eclectic sounding albums About Time and Nine Lives there was also a live album and tour with his old Blind Faith bandmate Eric Clapton as well as helping out Paul Weller on his album Stanley Road. Winwood has seemed to enjoy the less high profile success of his recent music and nothing since Roll With It has reached the same success as Back In The High Life yet this album is one of the eighties music treasures.

A quick crawl across the ''net shows me that many sites rank "Back In The High Life" as Steve Winwood''s best solo album while others make the case for "Arc of a Diver". For me it''s difficult to separate the two, both are excellent examples of the ''80s throw-everything-at-it-including-the-kitchen-sink AOR sound, although in the case of the "AOAD" Steve W did nearly all the throwing himself while on "BITHL" he had a cast of thousands lending their weight; it''s the latter, Winwood''s fourth solo album from 1986 that I''ve pulled off the shelf today. Much of "Back In The High Life" may already be familiar; of the eight tracks six were released as singles [in the days when singles meant vinyl 45s], although not all in the UK and can still be heard occasionally on adult-orientated radio [when they''re not playing "Valerie"]; and three of the tracks were included on Winwood''s "Chronicles" compilation [and one of these hadn''t even been a single!]. So "Back In The High Life", and what better way to begin an album than with the drum fill that introduces possibly the strongest [but not my personal favourite] song on the album. A top twenty UK single, "Higher Love" featuring Chakka Khan on backing vocal duties is the epitome of mid-''80s sophisticated pop-rock blue-eyed soul music and a great start. Second track "Take It As It Comes" is not surprisingly weaker but with its horns and drum fills that ''80s sophistication is retained and its worth its five minutes for the lengthy bluesy solo and horn tweeting run-out. "Freedom Overspill", a UK single, opens like an episode of Miami Vice with its sound firmly rooted in Jan Hammer territory, but once Winwood''s vocals and Joe Walsh''s slide guitar kick-in its true soft rock colours are revealed. Although released as a single in the UK to my ears "Back in the High Life Again" is actually one of the less exciting and weaker tracks here as Winwood slows things down with his gently tinkling mandolin, and for some reason I am reminded of the circa mid-80s radio-friendly Genesis sound [why I don''t know]. The lovely introduction to "The Finer Things" sounds like the theme tune to a costume drama set in in Ireland, but then it all goes off in an entirely different direction, and after changing direction a few more times it finishes leaving me confused, all in all it''s a bit of a filler really. Next up though is the laid-back sophistication of "Wake Me Up on Judgment Day", perhaps surprisingly this slower soft rocking song is my favourite track in this set. Co-written with Joe Walsh, "Split Decision" with its synths and Hammond organ it''s another sophisticated track but it does sound dated these days and just screams big hair, shoulder pads, mix-tapes and Ford Escort XR3i convertibles [happy memories!]; and then "My Love''s Leavin''" a gently sad ballad draws things to a close and you just have to love the way the synth motif dances between your ears, then so cutting-edge ''80s, now so hackneyed. And that''s it, it''s only eight tracks long but each is in excess of five minutes. If you''re looking for heads down four to the floor rock you''ve come to the wrong place ''cos this is isn''t, instead it''s layer upon layer of ''80s sophisticated blue-eyed soul, a little dated now admittedly but one to keep at hand for when you need a spot of ''80s throwback time.
